Welcome

Everything you need to take part. Please keep this handy for the following weeks

Thank you for taking part. Over the next three weeks you will wear the BeechBand and fill in a short survey each morning about the previous day: how you slept and how calm you felt. It takes about a minute a day.

What to do each week

Week 1: baseline week (no BeechBand)

This week records your normal sleep and calm before you start using the BeechBand.

  • Do not wear the BeechBand this week. Carry on with your normal routine.
  • Wear your usual sleep tracker at night so it records your sleep.
  • Fill in the daily survey the next morning. When it asks how many hours the BeechBand was worn, choose “Didn’t wear it today”, because you are not wearing it this week.

Weeks 2 and 3: wearing the BeechBand

  • Wear the BeechBand during the day, then take it off before you go to sleep.
  • Keep wearing your sleep tracker at night, as before.
  • Fill in the daily survey the next morning. This time, enter how many hours you wore the BeechBand the day before.
Filling in the daily survey

Do this once each morning, for the day before. It takes about a minute.

  1. Open your sleep tracker app first. Last night's sleep summary has most of the numbers you need (see the next section).
  2. Open the daily survey using your bookmarked link.
  3. Enter the same email each time, so your entries stay linked together.
  4. Answer each question. The sleep numbers are from last night, and the calm question is about how you felt yesterday.
  5. During the baseline week (week 1), remember to choose “Didn’t wear it today” for the BeechBand hours. In weeks 2 and 3, enter the hours you wore it.
Finding your numbers

The daily survey asks for a few things your tracker records overnight. You will find them all in last night's sleep summary.

You need four values: total sleep, REM sleep, number of times you woke, and your heart rate during sleep.

Where to look on the common devices:

Apple Watch

  • On the watch: press the Digital Crown, open the Sleep app (blue bed icon), and scroll down to Analysis to see last night's time asleep and stages.
  • In the app: on your iPhone, open the Health app and tap Browse, then Sleep. Tap the day, then “Show More Sleep Data” for total sleep and each stage including REM.
  • For your sleeping heart rate, in the Health app tap Browse, then Heart, then Resting Heart Rate (this is easiest in the app rather than on the watch).

Fitbit or Google Pixel Watch

  • On the watch: swipe up from the clock face, or open the Sleep tile, to see last night's sleep and score.
  • In the app: open the Fitbit app (or the Google Health app on newer devices) and tap the Sleep tile on the Today tab, then tap into last night for total sleep, stages including REM, and times awake.
  • Tap “Sleeping heart rate” in the same view for your heart rate during sleep (this may need Fitbit Premium; if you can’t see it, choose “Not shown” in the survey).

Samsung Galaxy Watch

  • On the watch: swipe to the Sleep tile to see last night's sleep score, sleep time and stages.
  • In the app: on your phone, open the Samsung Health app and tap the Sleep card, then tap the day to see sleep time and the stages: Awake, REM, Light and Deep.
  • The times you woke are shown as the “Awake” periods, and your sleeping heart rate is in the same sleep details in the app.

Garmin

  • On the watch: on newer models, open the Sleep glance for last night's sleep and score (older Garmin watches show sleep only in the app).
  • In the app: open the Garmin Connect app and tap the Sleep card for last night. You will see total sleep and the stages: Light, Deep and REM, plus the times you were awake.
  • Your overnight heart rate is shown on the same sleep screen, or under the Heart Rate card in Garmin Connect.

Oura Ring

  • Open the Oura app and tap the Sleep summary for last night.
  • Total sleep and REM are shown in the sleep stages breakdown.
  • Awakenings and your lowest or average heart rate are shown lower down in the same summary.

A different tracker

Most sleep trackers show the same things: total sleep, REM, times awake, and heart rate. Look in last night's sleep summary.

A few tips
  • Charge your tracker during the day. Top it up while you are getting ready or going about your day, so it has enough battery to record your sleep overnight. If it dies in the night, that night will not be recorded.
  • Bookmark the survey. You will use the same link every morning, so save it to your phone's home screen or bookmarks.
  • Use the same email each day. This is how your daily entries are kept together, so please enter it the same way every time.
  • Miss a day? Don't worry, and don't try to go back and fill it in. Carry on the next morning as normal. Missing a day does not change your schedule: keep going through week 1 and still switch to wearing the BeechBand at the start of week 2 as planned.
  • Fill it in in the morning, soon after you wake, while the day before is still fresh. The sleep numbers are from last night, and the calm question is about how you felt yesterday.
Your data and taking part
  • We collect your email address (to link your entries and send reminders) and your daily survey answers. That's it.
  • Your information is kept securely and used only for this feedback exercise.
  • Taking part is voluntary. You can stop at any time, just let us know and we will remove you from the mailing list.
